He earned his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1998 under the supervision of Professor Alan Bundy. He has been affiliated with Tecnológico de Monterrey since 1985 and has served as a Full Research Professor since 2010. He is a member of several distinguished scientific organizations, including Mexico’s National System of Researchers (Level III), the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Computing, and the Academic Technical Committee of CONACYT’s Thematic Network on Applied Computational Intelligence. His current research focuses on the development of novel machine learning models and their application to cybersecurity challenges. Throughout his career, he has chaired the technical program committees of numerous international conferences and workshops. He is the former President of the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (SMIA), the former President of CONACYT’s Thematic Network on Information and Communication Technologies, and former Secretary of the Mexican Academy of Computing. At Tecnológico de Monterrey, he leads the Advanced Artificial Intelligence Research Group.

Natalia Velazco is a data analyst and cultural manager whose work bridges technology, the arts, and community collaboration to develop agile and creative solutions through interdisciplinary practice. Her technical expertise includes programming, statistical modeling, text analysis, and data visualization. She has co-presented her research at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and at the Euro-Mediterranean Conference organized by the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage. She currently serves as a Data Analyst for the Chicago Early Childhood Integrated Data System (CECIDS) at Northern Illinois University, where she works on data-driven initiatives that support early childhood education and research.

An active collaborator with the Civic Innovation Lab, an interdisciplinary space led by M. in Eng. Elva Chávez and Dr. Saiph Savage, dedicated to applying technology to address social challenges and promote community well-being. His work involves data processing and analysis through projects aimed at developing proposals that harness the potential of artificial intelligence to improve people’s quality of life and foster civic engagement. He is currently a professor in the Computer Engineering Department at the School of Engineering, where he teaches key courses such as Digital Systems Design and Computer Structure and Programming.

He holds a degree in Computer Engineering from the School of Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He was a member of the Graduate School’s Biorobotics Laboratory, where he worked in the field of computer graphics and participated in the development of virtual simulators for hydroelectric power plants for the Mexican federal government. He has participated in institutional projects at UNAM and collaborated on entrepreneurial initiatives focused on the creation of studios for developing graphical applications for entertainment, marketing, and training purposes. He serves as Academic Advisor to the student organization Sociedad de Desarrollo en Videojuegos (SODVI) at the School of Engineering and as Academic Coordinator of the Diploma Program in “Video Game Design and Programming.” Since 2018, he has served as Coordinator of the Computer Engineering program, where he has overseen the accreditation process before CACEI (2018 and 2023 institutional frameworks) and the European ANECA accreditation seal (EUR-ACE, 2022).

He has served as Artistic Director of Mexico’s National Opera Company, Director of Casa del Lago, and Director of Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has hosted and conducted various television and radio series. He has been a columnist and editorial advisor for El Ángel, the cultural supplement of the newspaper Reforma. His reviews and essays have been published in Letras Libres, Pauta, Viceversa, and Vuelta, as well as in the newspapers El Norte, Reforma, and Unomásuno. The Mexican PEN Club awarded him the Gottlieb Prize for Best First Book for Tríptico (tres actos en una ópera). In 1994, Proceso magazine named him Critic of the Year.
